How to stop wheelie bin smells between collections

Bin smells usually build up from a few everyday habits, and many are easy to change. This guide covers the routine that keeps a wheelie bin fresher between collections, what to do when a smell will not shift, and when it is worth booking a professional clean instead of fighting it yourself.

Why bins smell in the first place

Wheelie bin odour usually traces back to liquids and food residue. Juices from bin bags, stray food scraps stuck to the walls and the bottom of the bin, and a lid that traps warm, damp air all combine into the smell you notice on a warm afternoon.

Because the bin is dark, warm and rarely cleaned, that residue keeps producing odour week after week until it is physically washed away.

A simple weekly routine

These habits take seconds and can help:

  • Follow your council's rules for food waste - use the food caddy and approved liners where there is a separate collection. Loose scraps stuck to the bin walls are a common source of smell.
  • Squeeze air out of bags and knot them before they go in. Less air means slower decomposition and less odour.
  • Drain liquids before binning leftovers, soup, or drinks. Free-flowing liquid is what soaks into the bottom of the bin.
  • Double-wrap anything particularly pungent - fish, meat packaging, nappies, pet waste.
  • Keep the lid closed between uses. It keeps rain out (wet waste smells worse) and flies away from the contents.
  • If your bin gets morning sun, moving it to a shadier spot slows down the warming that drives odour.

Rinsing and freshening between cleans

Every few weeks, give the bin a quick rinse: hose out the bottom, scrub any stuck-on residue with warm soapy water, then tip the water out and let the bin dry with the lid open for an hour. Tip dirty water into a foul drain such as an outside gully connected to the sewer or a toilet - never a surface-water drain or street drain, and wear gloves.

To keep the bin smelling neutral between rinses, sprinkle bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) across the bottom, or use a purpose-made bin deodoriser granule. Both absorb odour rather than masking it. Empty the residue into the outside waste on collection day.

When the smell will not shift

If a bin still smells after a rinse, the cause is usually a layer of grime that home cleaning cannot fully shift - dried liquid soaked into scratches in the plastic, or residue under the rim and in the lid grooves.

That is when a professional clean can help. We give the empty bin a pressure wash inside and out, which can shift residue that is hard to reach with a cloth. Results vary with how long residue has built up.

Book a one-off deep clean or a monthly plan

A one-off clean costs from £8.50 per bin and is the quickest way to reset a bin that has got away from you. If you would rather never think about it again, monthly plans start at £15 per month for two cleans, and you choose the dates that suit you each month.

Cleans run Monday to Friday between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, and you do not need to be home - just leave the bin empty and accessible.
